The Collegiate building at the University of Education in Freiburg im Breisgau has received a Hugo Häring Award from the Association of German Architects (BDA). The jury’s statement: “The new college building, with its two slightly offset structures, blends successfully into the urban context. The intersection between the two volumes forms the communicative heart of the building—as an open foyer on the ground floor and as a gathering area in front of the seminar rooms on the upper floors. Floor-to-ceiling interior glazing creates a variety of visual connections and, together with the spacious stairwells, lends the building a high level of spatial quality. Delicately placed light panels create a shifting play of light. The timber-frame structure with wood-concrete composite floors effortlessly meets the high requirements of a university building in Building Class 5. The horizontal facade bands required for fire protection are confidently integrated into the facade design through an alternation of Black Forest green-glazed bottom-and-top formwork and pressed sheet metal profiles. At the same time, they provide structural protection from the sun and the elements and give the facade a pleasing structure. With its consistent approach—from the urban design concept down to the structural details—the building combines high functional requirements with compelling architectural quality and creates robust, adaptable spaces."
